Binary Numbers
In mathematics, a number is written as a string of digits. In the base 10 system, it takes ten symbols to represent any given number. In the binary system, it only takes two symbols, “0” and “1”, to represent a given number.
Binary numbers are made up of only ones and zeros. Binary numbers are the most commonly used number system in the world. Computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices use binary numbers to do calculations or communicate information. Knowing how to read a binary number can be a valuable skill for people building electronics.
Binary numbers have been used for computers since they were first invented because there are only two symbols, so it is easy to use binary for calculations. Binary numbers are also commonly used in other technologies such as digital photography, fiber-optic communications, and radar.
