What is a Web Browser?
The web browser is a software, which is used to view and navigate to web pages. It displays webpage content in text, graphical, or audiovisual format when the user loads it in the browser.
Web browsers often come pre-installed with different software and operating system. Common web browers include; Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
Different Types of Web Browsers
Web browsers are software programs that allow users to view and navigate websites. There are a variety of types of web browsers, each with different features and capabilities.
While the term "browser" in general applies to any type of program used to view a webpage, here, we would be focusing on the most popular types of web browsers: desktop web browser, mobile web browser, and tablet/mobile hybrid browser.
- Desktop Web Browser: A desktop-based computer running Windows® or Mac® operating system with a graphical user interface (GUI) that supports HTML5 standards can be considered a desktop web browser. The primary function of this type of browser is to open pages residing on the local computer or network domain where they are stored (i.e., websites).
- Mobile Web Browser: Mobile web browsers make it possible for websites to be viewed on smartphones. Mobile browsers, or browsers designed for smartphones and tablet computers, have some different features from desktop browsers, such as being able to take advantage of the touchscreen interface.
- Tablet/Mobile Hybrid Browser: Tablet/mobile hybrid browsers are becoming increasingly popular as they provide the best of both worlds. They offer the convenience of using a mobile browsing experience, while still being able to use your fingers for typing and navigating as well as having the capability to use a mouse or stylus for editing. Tablet/mobile hybrid browsers also have a larger screen space which is used for viewing content without having to open new tabs.
