Horsepower: An Introduction
A horsepower, or hp, is a measure of power. It can also refer to the energy created by an animal or machine. When referring to machinery, horsepower is the unit used to quantify the rate at which work is done. One horsepower is equal to 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. One horsepower is equal to 746.4 watts.
There are two main types of horsepower: the horsepower used in the internal combustion engine and the horsepower used in a steam engine.
