The binary numeral system is the simplest of all numeric systems. It uses only two symbols, 0 and 1, to represent any number.
Binary is an important component in computer science because it defines the most fundamental unit of data in all computing-the bit. A bit can either be a 0 or a 1, with one instruction given to the computer depending on which value is present.
The characters are either 1 or 0, giving the system its name; binary numbers. These digits are called bits and they can be used in groups (called bytes) to store larger amounts of data. For example, the ASCII coding system uses 8 bits for each character in order to encode text. A computer program uses binary numbers to store instructions which are then executed by the CPU (central processing unit).
