What is a unique identifier? A unique identifier (UID) is the identifier of a particular individual, organization, or other object. One of its main purposes is to identify an entity unambiguously without requiring any additional data about that entity. For example, social security numbers are used as identifiers in the United States and Canada for both employees and newborn babies.
Unique identifiers are often labeled in the front of credit cards, phone numbers, and post office boxes. The Unique identifier can also be called an "ID" for short.
