Chess is a traditional board game that is played by two players. The objective of this game is to checkmate the king and the other pieces on the other side while defending one's own king.
The chessboard consists of 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid and each player starts off with 16 chess pieces: one king, one queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, and eight pawns. The board also has a number of spaces that are used only during the initial setup.
Pawns are the "weakest" type of chess piece on the board and their moves are limited to forward movements only. They can move either forward or sideways
It's believed to have originated in India about 1500 years ago. Legend says that it was invented by an Indian king who wanted to teach his son about the art of war. The game spread across Asia through trade routes before arriving in Europe, where it became hugely popular among nobility and intellectuals during the Middle Ages.
