# BMI Calculator

BMI is a simple math equation that takes into account your height and weight to determine whether you have a healthy weight. BMI, or Body Mass Index, has been used as a guideline for many years as how to determine if people are overweight. In the past few decades, it has been determined that BMI is not an accurate indicator of health due to its inability to take into account muscle mass and other factors.

BMI rates people on a scale of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. A person’s BMI can be calculated by dividing their weight in pounds by the square of their height in inches and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. Typically, the optimal weight for height range is associated with the least risk of chronic disease or premature death.

Body Mass Index is an indicator of the individual's relative weight. The BMI calculation divides the person's weight in kilograms by their height in square meters. A BMI below 18.5 (underweight) is considered underweight, whereas anything above 25 (overweight) is considered overweight. People with a BMI of 30 or higher are at risk for serious health problems such as heart disease and Diabetes Type II.

### BMI Calculation In Metric System

• Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
• Calculation: [weight (kg) / height (cm) / height (cm)] x 10,000

### BMI Calculation In Imperial System

• Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703
• Calculation: [weight (lb) / height (in) / height (in)] x 703
